Description:

The Law Council of Australia was created in 1933 as the peak national body representing the Australian legal profession. The existing state and territory legal professions recognised the need for a united front on a national level that could represent their interests to the Federal Government. They also recognised the value in having a national body which could add its weight in support of the state and territory representative organisations on issues of concern to them.

Mission/Aims:

To represent the legal profession at the national level, to speak on behalf of its constituent bodies on national issues affecting the legal profession; and

To promote the administration of justice, access to justice and general improvement of the law.

Principal Activities:

The Law Council of Australia advises governments, courts and other federal agencies on ways in which the law and the justice system can be improved for the benefit of the community.

Through its specialist sections, standing and ad-hoc committees, the Law Council provides interest groups and professional development opportunities for lawyers across a variety of specialised areas of law.

In cooperation with its constituent bodies and through its Sections, the Law Council also presents major events such as the biennial Australian Legal Convention, coordinates national Law Week and organises specialised seminars, workshops and conferences on a wide range of legal issues.
