Description: The National Association for Bilingual Education is the only professional organization at the national level wholly devoted to representing both English language learners and bilingual education professionals. Along with our affiliate organizations in 23 states, we represent a combined membership of more than 20,000 bilingual and English-as-a-second-language teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, university professors and students, researchers, advocates, policymakers, and parents.
The National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) is a dynamic non-profit membership organization headquartered in our nation's capital. NABE is the only professional organization at the national level wholly devoted to representing both the interests of language-minority students and the bilingual education professionals who serve them.
Language-minority children, who speak virtually all of the world’s languages, represent the fastest growing sector of America's school-age population. In fact, reliable estimates place their number at over six million. These children are a major part of our nation's future, and many of them are limited in their English proficiency. This points to a growing need for education programs that take into account the specific linguistic and academic challenges faced by America's English language learners.
Bilingual education ensures that these students acquire full command of the English language without falling behind in other subject areas. In doing so, bilingual programs open the door to academic excellence for students and benefit our nation as a whole.
Mission/Aims: NABE recognizes the importance of providing all children with access to a world-class education. In light of this, the Association's priorities include:
Keeping language-minority Americans clearly in focus as states and communities move forward with educational reforms
Improving instructional practice for linguistically and culturally diverse students
Expanding professional development programs for teachers serving language- minority students
Securing adequate funding for the federal Bilingual Education Act and other programs serving limited-English-proficient students
Defending the rights of language-minority Americans
