Description: The CVA was founded in 1967. Membership is open to National Veterinary Associations of the Commonwealth member countries. Currently the CVA has 53 full members with each member association being represented on a Regional Council by a Councilor elected by the member association. There are six regions representing Asia, Australasia/Oceania, Canada/Caribbean, East, Central and Southern Africa, West Africa and UK/Mediterranean. Each Regional Council elects for a four year term a Regional Representative who becomes a member of the Executive Council. The Executive Committee is responsible for running the affairs of the Association. As well as the six Regional Representatives there is also a Past-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Director of Programmes and Editor of CVA News under the Chairmanship of the President.
Mission/Aims: To promote the veterinary profession within the Commonwealth by encouraging the highest professional standards of education, ethics and service in order to advance animal health, productivity and welfare to improve the quality of life of all its peoples.
Principal Activities: The technical activities of the CVA cover a wide range and include the following:
Book and Journal programme wherein books donated by veterinarians in developed countries are distributed to the graduate veterinarians on requests from other countries.
Support for veterinary education and capacity building in developing countries. A Study fund to enable young veterinarians from developing countries to undertake a short term training programme in a neighbouring country.
Projects in all the six regions with preference to livestock production and health and involving women as the main stakeholders.
Publishing a Journal every six months.
Maintaining the CVA website.
