Description:

The Canadian Orthopaedic Association is always actively engaged in advancing the profession — a stewardship that respects tradition, fosters innovation, strives for the highest standards of care and speaks up for its members.

Mission/Aims:

Our mission is to achieve excellence in bone and joint health, mobility and function for all Canadians through the advancement of research, education and care.

Principal Activities:

We’re working on policy solutions for the key issues of the day: the wait times crisis, cannibalization of orthopaedic sub-specialties, health human resources, public and private delivery of care. We also enter into political alliances with other specialty societies to become a more effective agent of change and to make sure our perspective is heard at federal discussions. And increasingly we’re working in concert with provincial orthopaedic associations to address systemic problems in delivering care.

Our National Standards Committee has evolved into an important resource, gathering “best practices” information on specific issues and developing policy recommendations for the COA membership. To date, the NSC has produced an extensive analysis of Canada’s surgeon needs in orthopaedics (2004) and wait-time benchmarks (2005). Currently, the NSC is working with the CMA on a viable physician-assistant model that could translate into more efficient delivery of orthopaedic care.
