U.S. and Canada - if the orthodontist has completed an additional two to three years of study beyond dental school in an accredited orthodontic residency program.

Additional Information:

Only those who have completed an additional two to three years of study beyond dental school in an accredited orthodontic residency program may call themselves "orthodontists." Only orthodontists are elgible for membership in the American Association of Orthodontists.
