Description: The Gastroenterological Society of Australia is Australia's peak body for the disciplines of gastroenterology and hepatology. Our site is your online resource for professional and consumer information, information for GESA Members and more.
The Society is divided into Associations, including the Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association, Australian Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association and the Australian Liver Association, which advise Council and Society committees on matters related to their subspecialties. These associations have been instrumental in raising the profile of their respective disciplines, both nationally and internationally.
Mission/Aims: The objectives of the Society are:
To promote the advancement of knowledge, and maintain standards, in the practice of gastroenterology, hepatology and pancreatology.
To promote and foster research in basic and clinical science in these area.
To provide guidelines to relevant professional associations and colleges, as well as to governments, on the training of clinicians and the practice of gastroenterology in Australia.
Principal Activities: Organisation of scientific meetings.
Fostering basic and clinical research programs through research grants, scholarships, fellowships and travel awards; and through assistance with collaborative study, design and data collection of multi-centre clinical trials, statistical aspects and reporting.
Conducting educational meetings and producing educational material relevant to the fields of gastroenterology for non gastroenterological medical graduates, health professionals and consumers.
Advising Government, Professional Associations and other relevant bodies on regulatory matters which relate to gastroenterology.
These activities are undertaken by Standing Committees which include Research, Administration, Scientific Meetings, Education and Policy.
