Description: AOTOS is a vibrant society whose members specialise in all fields of singing, from opera to musical theatre, jazz to choral singing, class-room singing to classical song.
Mission/Aims: AOTOS promotes contact amongst teachers with differing skills; it gives us the opportunity to exchange ideas about teaching in an informal and welcoming atmosphere.
Principal Activities: We have three conferences a year: two one-day conferences in London, and a residential three-day event elsewhere.
Member Benefits: AOTOS welcomes all those concerned with teaching singing to students of all ages and standards, professional and amateur.
We have three conferences a year: two one-day conferences in London, and a residential three-day event elsewhere. "Singing", the AOTOS magazine, is issued twice a year, and comes free as part of the membership package. It plays an important part in keeping up to date with ideas, with new publications, both of music and books, and it sets out to provoke lively thought and debate, action and reaction. The magazine carries reports of the conferences.
Training/Licensing/Certification: The conferences explore the subjects that a teacher of voice is likely to encounter at all levels. The range of subjects is constantly increased to match current thinking.
Included in these subjects are:
Vocal physiology and techniques related to it
Teaching students of all ages
Teaching all vocal styles from opera to pop
The use of electronic equipment in teaching and performing
Examination standards and skills
The use of text and languages
Performance practice over a broad spectrum of repertoire
Observation of other teachers at work
AOTOS runs an annual residential Teacher Training Course in the summer. It is aimed both at those who are beginning to teach, and also at those who are looking to consolidate their skills. The course is open to all those interested, whether they are members of AOTOS or not.
Affiliations: Associations to which we are a member: National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS - America)
European Vocational Training Association (EVTA)
Verification Criteria: Teaching Diploma or other equivalent.
