Description: The Aromatherapy Society of South Africa is a non-profit organization founded by aromatherapists for aromatherapists on 26 October 1997. Its work is carried out by an Executive Committee based in Durban.
Mission/Aims: Our mission is to enhance the professional status of therapeutic aromatherapists and to protect their interests as members of the Society. In order to achieve our mission, we aim to:
Promote the interests of therapeutic aromatherapy through lobbying and advocacy;
Keep members informed of developments with regard to registration and accreditation;
Keep members abreast of developments in the field of therapeutic aromatherapy;
Foster lifelong learning among members by promoting Continued Professional Development;
Promote and foster greater appreciation of the benefits of therapeutic aromatherapy among the South African public;
Help with client referrals by maintaining a network of registered therapists.
Principal Activities: Arrange meetings for members every 2 months with invited speakers or a workshop.
Congress once a year in August - with dynamic international guest speakers, and local experts.
Publish a Journal 3 times a year - "Essence of Health and Beauty" with report backs on meetings, new essential oils and products, case histories, book reviews, annnouncing upcoming events.
Negotiate with various government bodies on issues relating to our profession e.g. tariff codes for medical aid reimbursement.
Member Benefits: Meetings and congresses as described above. Members are kept informed via the journal, via post and e-mail regarding developments in our profession. Having been registered as a profession only in 2000, there are some aspects of our profession still being negotiated. ASOSA does the legwork on behalf of its members.
